INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR PAT ESDEN

1-If you could go back in time and meet one famous person or legend in history, who would it be? Why? What would you say to them?

I’d like to meet the Grim Brothers, preferably at a bonfire party. I think it would be amazing to spend a night discussing folklore and listen to them tell old tales.

2 – What are you currently reading?

DARKNESS FAIR by Rachel Marks. It’s the second book in the Dark Cycle series. The first book in the series, DARKNESS BRUTAL came out last summer and was absolutely fantastic.  http://www.rachelannemarks.com

3- Who’s your favorite author?

I read a wide range of genres and have a ton of favorite authors. Melissa Marr and Holly Black are at the top of my list.

4-Why did you start writing?

My mother read to me a lot when I was very young. I remember being fascinated by how words and sentences could create rhythm, and make a person ‘see’ stories and feel things. I started writing stories and poetry around second or third grade.

5- Please give us the title and genre of your book and a 100-character or less tagline:

Title:  A HOLD ON ME (book 1, Dark Heart series)

Genre:  New adult paranormal romance

Tagline:  A HOLD ON ME is a gothic tale of love and revenge rooted in a family’s mysterious past.

6- Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

A HOLD ON ME is perfect for readers who enjoy paranormal novels that have a rich tone and are slightly on the darker side. As far as age, I recommend it for older teens and up. There is swearing and sex, but both are on the mild side of hot.  I’d especially recommend it for readers who enjoyed Jeaniene Frost’s BROKEN DESTINY series.

7-How did you come up with the idea for your book?

I knew I wanted to write a gothic novel with traditional elements, but updated to make less it predictable and more appealing to current readers.

While I was brainstorming ideas and characters, I visualized what I thought would be a good first scene for the novel. It was of an older teenage girl standing in the ocean while her father watched from the shore. Behind them were cliffs and a mansion. This scene didn’t end up being the beginning of A HOLD ON ME, but it is still there almost exactly as I first visualized. To me this scene represents the emotional core of this story, and gave me a starting point to build everything else around.

8-Tell us about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

This isn’t the first cover that Kensington Publishing created for A HOLD ON ME. The first cover featured a young woman with long straight hair and a determined look on her face, overlooking a pine forest. The sky was very overcast with the hint of brightness near the horizon.

However, after my editor Selena James went on maternity leave, the publisher’s sales and marketing team decided the cover looked too young—more appropriate for a young adult novel.  My temporary editor, Mercedes Fernandez, came up with the image that is now on my cover. Personally, the new model looks a lot more like the main character in the series. The current cover also perfectly catches the novel’s tone.

*The cover for BEYOND YOUR TOUCH (book 2) will be revealed soon. All I’m going to say is ‘hot—much hotter’.

9-Who would you cast for the main characters if your book became a movie?

I don’t visual actors when I write the book, so I really can’t answer this question. However, I do have a pinterest board with images that remind me of various characters. Including the main character, Annie, and her love interest.  https://www.pinterest.com/patesden/.

That said, I’d love to know who readers would chose for a cast.

10-How about an excerpt from your book meant to capture our imagination and make us want to read more?

Here’s a teaser from when Annie meets Chase for the first time. Annie’s been walking in the gardens. She strolls up onto the terrace and finds her younger cousin and his tutor translating a text into English.  She is surprised to discover Chase is also a part of the study group–only he’s translating a graphic novel instead of a classic like her cousin.

Chase’s head snapped toward me. I tried to glance away, but his gaze trapped mine.

And, for a heartbeat, the depth in his smoke-blue eyes took me back and stole my breath. What was going on behind that unflinching gaze? And who was he to the family, besides an employee? I had a hard time believing Grandfather or Kate would pay for his tutoring out of the kindness of their hearts. On top of that, he looked more like a guy who belonged in a fight club than studying classics.

My cheeks heated and I lowered my eyes. I wasn’t sure what he was thinking, but the thrum just below my belly button told me it was safer to stick to talking about graphic novels than plunging into that mystifying depth. I looked back up and put a lilt in my voice. “You’re way ahead of me. I’d never be able to read that version.”

“I doubt that,” he said. His low tone lowered. “I suspect you catch on to things real fast.”

“I—uh. Whatever.” My words came out softer than I’d intended.

Annie Freemont grew up on the road, immersed in the romance of rare things, cultivating an eye for artifacts and a spirit for bargaining. It’s a freewheeling life she loves and plans to continue–until her dad is diagnosed with dementia. His illness forces them to return to Moonhill, their ancestral home on the coast of Maine–and to the family they left behind fifteen years ago, after Annie’s mother died in a suspicious accident.

Once at Moonhill, Annie is shocked when her aunt separates her from her father. The next time Annie sees him, he’s a bizarre, violent shadow of his former self. Confused, she turns to an unlikely ally for support–Chase, the dangerously seductive young groundskeeper. MY REVIEW

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I recommend this book for fans of dark stories, gothic novels, and paranormal tales. I am a fan and wasn’t disappointed. It’s the first installment in a new series that has potential to go places. The author did a very good job with characters, plot, and pace. You can’t ask for more in a mystery book. KUDOS! I’ll be reading more books by Pat Esden in the future!
