5 ***** Wicked, dark, but oh-so-good love story

You may think it’s odd for an erotica and dark romance to be called a love story but that’s exactly what Claimed is about. When I finished reading Owned I couldn’t wait to start Claimed but mid-term week in my Master’s program didn’t allow me to do it so I had a serious case of Kayne-withdrawal, let me tell you that. LOL The second book in the Decadence after Dark series is just as addictive as the first one yet you have such a better understanding of the main characters and their motivations. Interestingly enough, M. Never tells the readers at the end of the book that she wrote Owned just so she could present Kayne as we see in Claimed. However, I think she managed to insert plenty of glimpses of this Kayne in the first book as well. At least I saw him this way. I won’t say much because I don’t like spoilers but if you read the first book you’ll understand what I mean. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? LOL

The book has tons of sexy scenes, a lot of suspense, and some serious soul-searching. It’s exactly what you expect from a dark romance and then some more. The characters are well fleshed-out, the plot is engrossing, and the pace is steady up to the middle of the book when all hell breaks loose and you feel like you’ve been thrown in the middle of a Hawaii Five-0 episode. A good one, that is. LOL Even though I knew I was going to get my HEA, there were some pretty tense moments.

In both books, the author does a great job of portraying a master/slave relationship, which differs from a D/s one in many ways. People who aren’t into the lifestyle may not know one from the other so I’m sure many readers didn’t get it. However, M. Never brilliantly shows us how Kayne and Ellie develop their relationship. Again without spoilers, I can safely say that a certain neighbor’s reaction got me laughing out loud because she represents SO MANY PEOPLE out there who does not have a clue about what happens inside a couple’s bedroom yet feels like they can pass judgement. It was brilliant. Kudos, Ms. Never!

Finally, I’ve got to say I fell in love with Kayne in the first book, deepened my feeling in this one, and can’t wait to read the last book of the trilogy. Moreover, I’ll never look at a cupcake the way I used to do before Kayne and Ellie’s story. LOL

“Should we stay, or go while the smoke lasts?” The cloth muffled her voice.

“You can hardly walk.”

She couldn’t argue that point. Neither could they wait to be found. “The Panteras won’t give up until we’re dead.”

“Maybe they think we are,” he argued under his breath.

“Maybe.”

She suspected Mateo would demand a body, even a charred one. Make that two. She and Jimmy didn’t have much choice, though, other than to crouch in dread while the fire crackled.

“Next birthday, I want an AK-47.” He nudged her. “Look.”

She fixed her blurry gaze on what appeared to be a black wolf emerging from the trees. The creature was larger than she’d thought wolves were, and she’d understood none remained in these mountains. They were all farther north or west. Somewhere else.

Apparently, she was misinformed.

Judging by its size, she guessed this was a male. He stopped before their hideout. Eyes the color of red coals surveyed them before he turned and darted down the trail she’d spotted.

“Holy cow, Batboy. Did you see that?” she whispered.

Jimmy didn’t reply. He prodded her again.

She stared at the big brown and gray wolf that took the black one’s place. Where on earth had he come from?

The beast turned its furry head at her and Jimmy. His eyes shone with a luminous light, like fireflies…

The Seventh Hour Book Blitz

The Seventh Hour
Tracey Ward
Publication date: January 6th 2016
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

When the Earth’s rotation slowed to a crawl mankind was plunged into a harsh world of burning hot days and endless, arctic nights. Some fled to the mountains for shelter. Others took to the seas, sailing forever in the perfect gold between the night and the day; a place known as the Seventh Hour.

Liv was raised aboard a ship chasing the Seventh. She’s never seen the night, never known true cold, and when a storm destroys her home she’s on land for the first time in her life. She’s alone, surrounded by strangers and perils she couldn’t have imagined in her worst nightmares. Her only chance at survival is Grayson.

He saved her. He’ll protect her. He hates her.

Old grudges run deeper than the sea, and Liv and Gray will have to overcome them together to make it to morning.

To survive the longest night.

EXCERPT:

Change doesn’t happen overnight.

That’s what they used to say. I bet it used to be true.

Now it’s an idiom, a phrase we use out of six hundred year old habit that has no literal meaning anymore. Not since the world changed and everything was forced to change with it. The people, the animals. The weather and the landscape. The very nature of the Earth shifted, taking all of us with it.

And no, it didn’t happen overnight.

We adapted or we died, and if there was one good thing about the slowing of the Earth it was that it gave us time. Time to learn, time to prep, time to adjust. Time to save what technology we needed to survive and cast the rest aside. To build cities to withstand the bitter cold and the blistering heat.

Some burrowed into the mountains, building their homes and cities under the ground. They hid from the elements and they waited out the summers. The winters. The hours.

Others refused to hide. As the oceans pooled to the north and south, burying the old world and raising a new supercontinent that circled the Earth like a ring, they took to the sea. They built boats, set sail, and left the frigid night and burning day behind. They stay in the hours in between, in the half-light. That perfect hour. The golden hour.

The Seventh hour.

“You’re gay?” Niall’s voice cracked.

“You’re surprised?” Michael forced himself to smile. “I don’t wear it on my sleeve, but I prefer cock to pussy.”

“I’m shocked.” Niall settled in his seat and let go of the wheel. “All the girls love you, and the moms all line up to see you during conferences. Every time I look over there when you’re with parents, you seem to enjoy the female adulation.” He turned the car off and lowered his gaze. “Sorry. That’s rude. I assumed you were straight, and now I’m bashing you.”

“You’re not the first to assume and not the first to say what’s on your mind.” He debated what to say next. He needed to move with caution. “I’m gay and I’m attracted to you.”

“And you want to go on a date with me.” Niall finally looked at Michael. “I can’t believe you’re into me, but I’m all for it.” He grinned, although the tips of his ears were red. “When? I’m free pretty much every day once the staff meetings are over tomorrow.”

“How about Thursday night?” He’d prefer Friday night, but he was supposed to be leaving Friday midmorning.

“I’m free Friday. We could go then?”

“I’m busy on Friday.” He wanted to tell Niall the truth, but he couldn’t. No way he’d disclose his secret yet.

“Another guy?” Niall lowered his gaze again. “I should’ve known.”

“It’s not like that. I only date one person at a time.” He eased his hand free from the carrier. “I’ve got a second job, and I need to be at that Friday night.”

“Oh.” Niall covered his face with his hands. “I’m so…sorry. I speak before I think, and it gets me into trouble.” He glanced over at Michael. “What the hell? Why not?”

“You’re unsure.” Michael wanted to keep questioning Niall, but they were late in getting the food to the other staff members. “Clue me in after the meeting?”

“Don’t have to wait that long.” Niall opened his car door. “I’m crap at dating. I’ve only had one boyfriend, and we didn’t really…date.”

“All sex, all the time?” Not that so much sex with Niall didn’t sound wonderful. He wanted to be the man tangled up with Niall between the sheets.

“With Kurt when it was good, it was great. When it was bad, it was over.” Niall shrugged. “If you’re willing to give me a chance and to take things slow, we’ve got a shot.”

He grabbed Niall’s hand and squeezed his friend’s fingers. He needed to act on instinct and not fight his attraction to Niall. “Then let me give you a better perspective.” He leaned across the console of the car and kissed his friend. Sparks shot through his body, and his lips tingled. He never should’ve waited this long to give in to his crush.

Niall moaned and opened to him, allowing Michael to suck on his tongue.

Niall grabbed the front of Michael’s shirt. He broke the connection first and gasped for breath. “I like the new perspective.”

“That doesn’t have to be the only kiss.” Michael rested his forehead against Niall’s. “Come over tonight.”

“After the meeting, I’m all yours.” Niall let go of Michael, and when he climbed out of the car, he wobbled a bit. He wandered around the front of the vehicle and grabbed the bags from between Michael’s knees.

Michael didn’t bother to hide the smile. This was the start of something great, and he couldn’t wait to get through the meeting. He wanted so much more of Niall Grayson and in every way possible.

M9B Friday Reveal: Cover Reveal – Facsimile by Vicki L. Weavil

M9B-Friday-Reveal-Bannernew

Welcome to this week’s M9B Friday Reveal!

This week, we are revealing the cover for

Facsimile by Vicki L. Weavil

an upcoming Month9Books Title!

Author, Vicki L. Weavil, also shares her thoughts on the cover.

Be sure to enter the giveaway found at the end of the post!

I love this cover because it reflects the book so well. The image of a girl standing alone on a desolate world is a perfect depiction of my protagonist, Ann, as well as her “sand over stone” world, Eco. But it’s also symbolic, because although Ann isn’t really alone, she often feels isolated on her frontier planet. The addition of the image of the Earth is also appropriately symbolic. Ann can’t actually see the Earth from Eco, but since her goal is to live on Earth it’s always on her mind, so the inclusion of the Earth image is a wonderful metaphor for her hopes and dreams.

facsimile ebook final

For a ticket to Earth, seventeen-year-old Anna-Maria “Ann” Solano is willing to jettison her birth planet, best friend, and the boy who loves her. Especially since all she’s required to do is escort Dace Keeling, a young naturalist, through the wilderness of the partially terraformed planet Eco. Ann‘s determination to escape the limitations of her small, frontier colony never falters, until Dace’s expeditions uncover three secrets. One offers riches, one shatters Ann’s perceptions of herself, and one reveals that the humans stranded on Eco are not its only inhabitants.

Ann’s willing to sacrifice friendship and love for a new life on Earth. But when an entire species is placed in jeopardy by her actions, she must make a choice – fulfill the dream that’s always sustained her, or save the planet she’s never considered home.

LIVE ME BLOG TOUR

Please welcome guest author Celeste Grande’s blog tour. She wrote a lovely guest post for us about her writing process! ENJOY!

WRITING PROCESS

by Celeste Grande

My writing process is unique. I work a full time “day” job in Manhattan that requires a two hour commute each way. This is both a blessing and a curse. It’s four hours of my life every day that was essentially wasted…until I started writing. Live Me was completely written while commuting during those four hours…enter where it became a blessing. It’s not quiet by any means, but I tend to block it out and think that the outside noise around me actually serves as a better atmosphere for me. I’ve tried to write in quieter conditions and it doesn’t seem to flow as easily. However, I have an equally hard time trying to write while I have music on, even if it’s a song inspiring a scene. I’ll have to pause as I go.

So, I hand-write. I’ve tried to type, but again, it just doesn’t flow comfortably for me. Possibly because I really am a crappy typist. So I find myself going back to correct words and then losing my train of thought and where I was or what exactly I wanted to say.

I then type what I’ve written during my lunch hour at work. It makes everything take longer, but it also allows for extra editing because while I’m typing, I’m fixing and thickening the scenes.

After it’s typed, I print out the chapter so I can read it on paper and I take a red pen to it. By the time it gets to my CP, it’s already been through essentially two rounds of edits by me. Then I make the CP’s changes and then I send it out to betas. (This could all be why Live Me took three years to write and edit and release)

I am a mix between a plotter and a pantster.  I need to have down the major happenings of a story, but then I just write. I don’t stick to guidelines of what’s to happen in each chapter and I often find my very bold characters changing where I wanted to go with things anyway. 😉

After ALL of that, I have two editors, one who does more than one round, and a proofreader. Phew! That’s a lot of work for words, yeah?

Excerpt

Jade froze, her paintbrush hanging mid-air above her palette. An eerie, surreal frame was cast as light streamed diagonally through the bay window.

Whispers seduced and coerced.

She scanned the entire painting. The buildings cast long, ominous shadows, stalking the pedestrians as they made their way to and fro, huddled against the misery of the evening. A man lay sprawled, his lifeblood staining the sidewalk crimson. Half in a deserted alley, he was yet to be discovered. This was the detail Jade concentrated on. She blended a burnt red and used careful brush strokes to complete the scene as the portrait fell prey to the darkness that burned inside her.

Without meaning to, her gaze was once again drawn to the slain man. She reached up and touched the blood seeping from his body, coming away wet. Bringing her hand to her nose she closed her eyes and inhaled.

Instead of the cloying scent of her oils, she inhaled the coppery smell of blood.

Stunned, her mouth parted on a silent scream. No! Darkness bubbled to the surface, invading her senses with a roar. Unable to fight the invasion, her heart beat an increasing crescendo. Part of her didn’t want to struggle, not with the temptation of death on her hand.

Deep inside, a macabre shadow stretched. Hungry for more, its long arms clawed for purchase with each breath. Changing her, as part of her argued for the better. The other part—the one that gloried in her fire-kissed hair and shimmering eyes—cried against this crime and screamed for redemption.

She crouched to welcome the demonic strength as the parasitic monster grew inside her. Evolving into a fierce predator, she was able to taste, weigh, and measure the souls who sifted through her fingers.

Still, she fought for space in her own body. For control.

But with the scent of blood, of death, of prey—she was losing fast. It’s happening. Unshed tears burned her eyes. Finally. The curse of the three Fates had begun. With her.

Slowly Jade stood and bit down on her lip and welcomed the pain. The distraction would help fight the transformation. Dipping the brush into the Caribbean blue, she swirled then began to paint a shimmering cove. The vision soothed the beast that lurked just beneath, but it was temporary, and Jade knew its evil would soon rebel. The Fates’ curse would change her over time, unleashing an unstoppable power within her, annihilating the gods who created her and anyone who got in her path.

Including her family.

Dropping the blue-tipped brush, Jade’s back snapped straight and her mouth opened on silent scream. Succumbing to a surge of menace, she lost control. Every cell stretched to accommodate the new presence. Shivering from the effects of her altered state, she briefly shut her eyes, adjusting. When she opened them, her painting was before her, and she viewed the scene anew. Cocking her head, she closely observed a woman who tightly clutched her rain slicker about her body.

This one will not make it home tonight.
