His voice took on a husky, seductive quality. “The women I date aren’t interested in my body, Sophie. What interests them is how I pleasure their bodies.”

She stared deep into his icy blue eyes and snickered.

Max never missed even the smallest of details. They were often the difference between success and getting your hat handed to you. Tonight, he noticed Sophie’s eyes betray her, even as she mocked him. Her pupils were dilated, the rich, whiskey-colored irises nearly overtaken by black. I have her attention.

Embolden by her body’s reaction, he took a step closer. He was so close that if she’d been breathing, her breath would’ve warmed his skin. “I can bring much more to your bed than my father does. So…much…more…” He drew out the words, emphasizing each in a voice that oozed sex. “And though I’m not an easy man to impress, I’m sure you’d have no trouble persuading me to finance your agency. None at all,” he drawled.

Neither of them spoke for a long moment, maybe two. The air was charged. The silence dangled between them like a ripe peach, fragrant and swollen, tempting the weakest among them to reach for it first.

“What do you think?” he asked softly, ending the silence.

While waiting for her response, a calculated kind of wait, he resisted the urge to lift his hand and run his fingers through the strands of hair that’d come loose, softly framing her face.

“I think you really are an ass.”

With that, she turned and walked away. Leaving him to gape at her magnificent back.

That Monday evening Cierra arrived home at just after seven thirty and pulled into the driveway.

Enzo Rawlins was rolling his garbage can to the curb.

Cierra got out of her car and walked up to him.  “Hey Enzo, thanks for leaving me stranded that night at The San Jose Gladiator’s Foundation Annual Dinner. I always knew you weren’t a gentleman, you jerk,” she yelled.

Enzo gazed up and gave her a weak smile. “Didn’t you get my messages?” he asked but didn’t wait for a response. “Anyway, I felt pretty bad about leaving you like that. Look I’m sorry.  And I wanted to make it up to you. That is why I rolled your garbage can to the curb so you didn’t have to.”

“Wow thanks. I guess I can’t stay mad at you for doing me that favor.”

“You know I would only abandon you Cierra if I got really distracted. You know me…”

“Whatever,” Cierra demurred.

 EXCERPT

Jax raked a hand over his hair. He did not want her to leave without him. That meant only one thing. He had to go to her and convince her they couldn’t be separated. He stood and cast his gaze on Ian. The boy slept soundly. Jax had to find a compromise by doing right by the boy and doing right by his heart.

He closed the door behind him gently and checked on Sophia’s room. She wasn’t there. Then he went downstairs. Peeking into the study, he saw Lady Charlotte placing covers over Lord Ridgecroft and making him comfortable. Could she be in the kitchen? He continued down the hall and caught a glimpse of two people sitting on a bench. Jeeves and Sophia. Fisting his hands, he drew in a breath and steeled up his courage.

Jax knocked on the glass of the french doors and stepped out. She looked up at him, sadness etched in her face.

“Can we talk?” he asked.

Jeeves glanced at Sophia. She offered the butler a small smile. “It’s fine.”

Jeeves stood and bowed. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ll finish my rounds and retire for the evening.”

“Good night, Jeeves,” Jax said.

The butler nodded and left.

“I had no idea I had a son. This was a surprise.”

“It’s clear the boy is yours,” she said, softly. “And so is your duty.”

“I won’t deny it,” Jax paused. “And I do want to get to know him, but I don’t want to lose you either.”

“I have to leave tomorrow.”

He pursed his lips, frustrated. “I knew Fiona briefly. I was attracted to her because she was kind, but I knew nothing would ever come of us. My father suggested she knew that, too, that’s why she never told me.”

“I’m sorry.” Sophia looked at her fingers in her lap, then up at him. “She should have contacted you. It would have been the right thing to do.”

He sighed and took the seat next to Sophia placing her hand between his. He snared her eyes with his stare. “The right thing to do is let me go with you tomorrow. I care for you.”

“I know what it’s like to lose a parent. I was twelve when my mother passed away. I still remember the little things, like her smile. I remember traveling all over Britain with her. When my mot

“He can come with us.” Jax just blurted out the first thought that came to his mind. If Sophia wanted Ian to be close to Jax, then it only made sense to have Ian come with them. Jax thought the idea was inspired.

Sophia’s mouth fell open, then she closed it, before she scrunched up her brows. “Are you serious? That we take a five-year-old traipsing all over Europe with us?”

“Why not? It’s the only way we can be all together.” He had no idea what it would entail, but what better way to solve his problem? He would get to know his son and remain close to Sophia.

MY REVIEW 5*

Gripping time travel story

*I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.*

Well, let me just make something very clear here: I’m a total sucker for Time Travel stories (HUGE fan of Dr. Who, for instance) and ANYTHING Victorian. Romance novels set in that period are my thing. Plus, I had read book three in the series – ‘A lady Never Lies’ – and had LOVED it. So I was eagerly waiting for this new installment. But in case you don’t like serials please don’t get me wrong. This book can be read independently from the previous three but you’d be missing on excellent stories and a lot of talent if you skip them.

As usual, Stephanie Buckhart delivered a great book. ‘A Princess is always right’ is a very well-written story with likeable characters and lots of adventure. I recommend it for fans of fantasy and/or good books.

“Should we stay, or go while the smoke lasts?” The cloth muffled her voice.

“You can hardly walk.”

She couldn’t argue that point. Neither could they wait to be found. “The Panteras won’t give up until we’re dead.”

“Maybe they think we are,” he argued under his breath.

“Maybe.”

She suspected Mateo would demand a body, even a charred one. Make that two. She and Jimmy didn’t have much choice, though, other than to crouch in dread while the fire crackled.

“Next birthday, I want an AK-47.” He nudged her. “Look.”

She fixed her blurry gaze on what appeared to be a black wolf emerging from the trees. The creature was larger than she’d thought wolves were, and she’d understood none remained in these mountains. They were all farther north or west. Somewhere else.

Apparently, she was misinformed.

Judging by its size, she guessed this was a male. He stopped before their hideout. Eyes the color of red coals surveyed them before he turned and darted down the trail she’d spotted.

“Holy cow, Batboy. Did you see that?” she whispered.

Jimmy didn’t reply. He prodded her again.

She stared at the big brown and gray wolf that took the black one’s place. Where on earth had he come from?

The beast turned its furry head at her and Jimmy. His eyes shone with a luminous light, like fireflies…

Shatterproof Virtual Book Tour

VBT_Shatterproof_Banner copy

You all know how much I enjoy guest authors mainly when they agree to an interview. It’s a great way of knowing authors better and K. K. Weil is a delightful guest in that aspect. Her answers are witty, thoughtful, and fun. Is there a better way to introduce one’s own work than being an awesome interviewee?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, K. K. You’re a star! And just so you know, I’d love to meet Cleo as well. hehe PLUS, I was named after Elizabeth Taylor because my mom loved the movie… how cool is that?

Now, please help me welcome — K. K. Weil!

Author Interview

What are you currently reading?

Right now, I’m reading Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline. It’s keeping me on the edge of my seat. Great read.

Do you have a favorite author? Who is it?

There are a ton of authors I’d put on that list and every day I think of different ones. A few of my favorites today are Margaret Atwood, who first introduced me to dystopian society, Ayn Rand, who gave me one of my all-time favorite novels, Atlas Shrugged, Amy Harmon, whose writing is just beautiful and Christopher Buckley, because he’s hysterical.

When did you start writing?

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I always had a work in progress in a notebook somewhere close by. I recently found one of my earliest stories about kids who were in a sleepaway camp and got into all sorts of trouble. I have many of my old notebooks stuffed in a duffel bag in my basement.

Why do you write?

There are so many things I love about writing. The rush I get from writing a crucial scene is exciting. Creating characters and storylines brings me into another world, where anything I choose can happen. And then there’s the fact that if I didn’t write, I wouldn’t know what to do with all of those stories that bounce around in my head.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

I’d recommend Shatterproof to anyone looking for a real-life love story about two flawed twenty-somethings searching for meaning in their lives. Shatterproof looks at things from a different perspective. Instead of hearing from a victim (or someone who rescues a victim), we’re seeing things from the point of view of a young man who has been a witness to his mother’s abuse his entire life. His conflicted feelings of love and resentment toward his mother aren’t usually portrayed in fiction, but are very real for people who’ve grown up in these households. His only solace is that he can help other women in similar situations, even if he can’t help his mother. Griffin’s terrified of repeating the cycle, which is why he keeps women at an arm’s length, until he meets Frankie. She’s got her own unique take on the world and Griffin’s situation, which makes the book different as well.

cleopatra-1963-elizabeth-taylor-16282231-1503-1016__130522232944

If you could go back in time and meet one famous person or legend in history, who would it be? Why? What would you say to them?

I think I’d like to meet Cleopatra. I’ve always been fascinated by anything to do with Ancient Egypt and specifically, her power at the time. I’d love to hear her point of view about her world, her relationships and her death.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

Griffin was a character in my first book, At This Stage. I never intended for him to take on the life that he did in that book, but the more I wrote about him, the more I fell in love with him. I decided then that I’d give him his own story and explore what made him tick. There had to be a very good reason that he was as serious and brooding as he was. Something must have happened to someone he loved, not just to him, because he’s the type of guy who’d always put himself second. And who could he possibly love more growing up than his mother? That’s how Shatterproof came alive.

Tell us about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

Debbie Taylor at The Wild Rose Press is my cover artist. I am so grateful for the work she did for me. I knew I wanted the mood of the cover to be somewhat ominous and dark, because I thought that would fit the book well. She captured exactly the tone I was looking for, while the bright NYC buildings make it pop beautifully. I loved it as soon as I saw it.

Who would you cast for the main characters if your book became a movie?

I’d love to see either Liam Hemsworth or Charlie Hunnam play Griffin. For Frankie, I picture someone who can be wide eyed, yet strong at the same time, like Emma Stone. Griffin’s mother would be elegant and beautiful, along the lines of an older Cate Blanchett. And I think Rob Lowe would be perfect for Griffin’s father.

How about an excerpt from your book meant to capture our imagination and make us want to read more?

Sure! This is an excerpt from Frankie’s perspective. She’s about to meet Griffin’s parents for the first time and Griffin has been on edge about it all day.

Frankie

When Griffin’s father strides out the door, I involuntarily suck in a gasp. Approaching us is possibly the most handsome man I’ve ever seen, especially in his sharp button-down shirt, slacks and designer shoes. He’s almost Griffin’s clone, except as he smiles to say hello, some soft lines surround his mouth and fiery brown eyes. His dark hair has the same slightly reddish tint as Griffin’s but it’s short, with not a single strand out of place. He’s got Griffin’s high cheekbones and deep dimples indenting his cheeks. These two could be twins born a couple of decades apart.

A small guttural sound spurts from Griffin, who practically has smoke coming out his ears, and two things occur to me. One: I cannot be thinking about how beautiful this man is. I have to hate him the way Griffin does, because, for God’s sake, he’s an abusive asshole. And two: even though he has explained it to me, I’m grasping for the first time why Griffin keeps his appearance the way he does. Morally, he is the polar opposite of his father, yet their physical features could make them identical.

“Frankie,” his father says, revealing a smile matched in beauty only by his son’s. “I’m so glad to be meeting you. I’m Evan.” He extends his hand.

Griffin is absorbed by his father’s manicured hand grasping mine. Definitely no tattoos on those knuckles. He releases me and turns to Griffin.

“Hello, my boy,” he says, but doesn’t reach for his hand. Maybe he knows Griffin won’t shake it and doesn’t want to make things awkward. Instead he gives Griffin a playful slap on the back. Griffin straightens.

“Why aren’t you at work?” Griffin snaps at his father. Griffin’s hands quiver and he crams them in his pockets.

“I was.” His father ignores the tone. “But when your mother mentioned you were bringing a date for dinner, I decided to cut our meeting short. Why don’t we go inside? Your mom said everything’s almost ready.” He tries to escort me by placing a hand on my spine. Griffin pulls me away and steps between us to walk.

Dinner should be interesting.

EXCERPT

GRIFFIN

“You need to grow up, Griffin,” my father spat at me. “Life isn’t perfect. You need to get over it and move on. Your mother can. She’s happy with me and whatever we have between us is our business, not yours. Grow the hell up, and start acting like a man instead of a petulant child.”

Heat shot through my body at lightning speed. “Act like a man—like you?” I shouted. “What should I do, go pick some amazing woman who’s full of life and beat it out of her until she can’t even recognize herself any more, until she can’t even differentiate between love and pain? Is that what a man does, Dad? Is that what I should do?”

My father broke into a smile. An evil, condescending, terrifying smile. “You think you’re so different from me?” He hovered over me. His tone was sinister, as if he was trying to cut through my skin with nothing but his voice. “Get up.” He yanked my arm and pulled me by the elbow into the bathroom. He grabbed the back of my head and forced me to face the mirror. “Look at yourself, Griffin. And look at me. Everything about you comes from me. You may deny it now. You may put yourself on a pedestal, thinking you’re above being human, but just know that the fire inside you, that’s my fire. That passion, it’s mine. And when you have an uncontrollable desire to love, to hurt, to possess a woman, it’s from me. Nothing is yours alone. Even this face.” He snagged my chin between his strong fingers. I tried to yank it away from his grasp, but he held on too tight. “It’s mine. And there’s nothing you can do about it. You can try to mask it in this mess of hair and clothes and tattoos you have going on, but know that every time a woman falls in love with that face, every time she says she can’t resist you because of it, every time she can’t walk away from you…it’s because of me. It’s because you are me. We. Are. The. Same.” He released my chin with a shove and left the bathroom.

Dougal MacBride froze in his tracks in the doorway of his home.

“Happy New Year,” shouted a group of people he didn’t recognize. They stood in a small group gathered around his kitchen table.

They were dressed in strange clothing— brightly-colored coats on the men, women, and children alike. The women wore scandalous dungarees and their heads weren’t covered.

Fear gripped his throat and pounded at his temples. Who were these strangers and what were

they doing in his home? They didn’t seem threatening, but Dougal looked around for a weapon and spotted the fire poker. “What are ye doing here?”

The strangers stared at him with eager anticipation, but for what he didn’t know. “Tell me, what are ye doing here?”

The only decently dressed woman stepped forward. Her floor-length dress was cinched tightly at the waist, accenting her full hips and ample bosom. Her blue eyes twinkled like the clear winter’s sky and her auburn curls, peeking out from under her white bonnet, framed a pretty face.

“Welcome to my home.”

“Yer home?”

The room felt warm to his cheeks, so he knew the fire had been blazing for a few hours. Whatever their reason for being here, he wouldn’t allow them to stake a claim to his home. He waved his hand at them, like swatting at bothersome flies. “Be gone with ye.”

The woman’s blue eyes clouded to a cool gray. “I’m Mrs. MacBride, the Scottish woman in the village and…”

“Yer not.”

4* Story

I received this book in exchange for an honest review so I must be honest. Being a Dr. Who/time travel fan, crazy about hot Scottish men, and an erotica writer, I confess to having approached this book with a lot of caution. It turned out to be useless because I didn’t need to worry. The book is a gem in many aspects. It’s a hot read with a great plot and likeable characters.

After all, what is there not to like when there’s a bright heroine and a to-swoon-for hero in a hot story, right?

“You’re gay?” Niall’s voice cracked.

“You’re surprised?” Michael forced himself to smile. “I don’t wear it on my sleeve, but I prefer cock to pussy.”

“I’m shocked.” Niall settled in his seat and let go of the wheel. “All the girls love you, and the moms all line up to see you during conferences. Every time I look over there when you’re with parents, you seem to enjoy the female adulation.” He turned the car off and lowered his gaze. “Sorry. That’s rude. I assumed you were straight, and now I’m bashing you.”

“You’re not the first to assume and not the first to say what’s on your mind.” He debated what to say next. He needed to move with caution. “I’m gay and I’m attracted to you.”

“And you want to go on a date with me.” Niall finally looked at Michael. “I can’t believe you’re into me, but I’m all for it.” He grinned, although the tips of his ears were red. “When? I’m free pretty much every day once the staff meetings are over tomorrow.”

“How about Thursday night?” He’d prefer Friday night, but he was supposed to be leaving Friday midmorning.

“I’m free Friday. We could go then?”

“I’m busy on Friday.” He wanted to tell Niall the truth, but he couldn’t. No way he’d disclose his secret yet.

“Another guy?” Niall lowered his gaze again. “I should’ve known.”

“It’s not like that. I only date one person at a time.” He eased his hand free from the carrier. “I’ve got a second job, and I need to be at that Friday night.”

“Oh.” Niall covered his face with his hands. “I’m so…sorry. I speak before I think, and it gets me into trouble.” He glanced over at Michael. “What the hell? Why not?”

“You’re unsure.” Michael wanted to keep questioning Niall, but they were late in getting the food to the other staff members. “Clue me in after the meeting?”

“Don’t have to wait that long.” Niall opened his car door. “I’m crap at dating. I’ve only had one boyfriend, and we didn’t really…date.”

“All sex, all the time?” Not that so much sex with Niall didn’t sound wonderful. He wanted to be the man tangled up with Niall between the sheets.

“With Kurt when it was good, it was great. When it was bad, it was over.” Niall shrugged. “If you’re willing to give me a chance and to take things slow, we’ve got a shot.”

He grabbed Niall’s hand and squeezed his friend’s fingers. He needed to act on instinct and not fight his attraction to Niall. “Then let me give you a better perspective.” He leaned across the console of the car and kissed his friend. Sparks shot through his body, and his lips tingled. He never should’ve waited this long to give in to his crush.

Niall moaned and opened to him, allowing Michael to suck on his tongue.

Niall grabbed the front of Michael’s shirt. He broke the connection first and gasped for breath. “I like the new perspective.”

“That doesn’t have to be the only kiss.” Michael rested his forehead against Niall’s. “Come over tonight.”

“After the meeting, I’m all yours.” Niall let go of Michael, and when he climbed out of the car, he wobbled a bit. He wandered around the front of the vehicle and grabbed the bags from between Michael’s knees.

Michael didn’t bother to hide the smile. This was the start of something great, and he couldn’t wait to get through the meeting. He wanted so much more of Niall Grayson and in every way possible.

Excerpt

Jade froze, her paintbrush hanging mid-air above her palette. An eerie, surreal frame was cast as light streamed diagonally through the bay window.

Whispers seduced and coerced.

She scanned the entire painting. The buildings cast long, ominous shadows, stalking the pedestrians as they made their way to and fro, huddled against the misery of the evening. A man lay sprawled, his lifeblood staining the sidewalk crimson. Half in a deserted alley, he was yet to be discovered. This was the detail Jade concentrated on. She blended a burnt red and used careful brush strokes to complete the scene as the portrait fell prey to the darkness that burned inside her.

Without meaning to, her gaze was once again drawn to the slain man. She reached up and touched the blood seeping from his body, coming away wet. Bringing her hand to her nose she closed her eyes and inhaled.

Instead of the cloying scent of her oils, she inhaled the coppery smell of blood.

Stunned, her mouth parted on a silent scream. No! Darkness bubbled to the surface, invading her senses with a roar. Unable to fight the invasion, her heart beat an increasing crescendo. Part of her didn’t want to struggle, not with the temptation of death on her hand.

Deep inside, a macabre shadow stretched. Hungry for more, its long arms clawed for purchase with each breath. Changing her, as part of her argued for the better. The other part—the one that gloried in her fire-kissed hair and shimmering eyes—cried against this crime and screamed for redemption.

She crouched to welcome the demonic strength as the parasitic monster grew inside her. Evolving into a fierce predator, she was able to taste, weigh, and measure the souls who sifted through her fingers.

Still, she fought for space in her own body. For control.

But with the scent of blood, of death, of prey—she was losing fast. It’s happening. Unshed tears burned her eyes. Finally. The curse of the three Fates had begun. With her.

Slowly Jade stood and bit down on her lip and welcomed the pain. The distraction would help fight the transformation. Dipping the brush into the Caribbean blue, she swirled then began to paint a shimmering cove. The vision soothed the beast that lurked just beneath, but it was temporary, and Jade knew its evil would soon rebel. The Fates’ curse would change her over time, unleashing an unstoppable power within her, annihilating the gods who created her and anyone who got in her path.

Including her family.

Dropping the blue-tipped brush, Jade’s back snapped straight and her mouth opened on silent scream. Succumbing to a surge of menace, she lost control. Every cell stretched to accommodate the new presence. Shivering from the effects of her altered state, she briefly shut her eyes, adjusting. When she opened them, her painting was before her, and she viewed the scene anew. Cocking her head, she closely observed a woman who tightly clutched her rain slicker about her body.

This one will not make it home tonight.

NAKED – A NOVEL OF LADY GODIVA BLOG TOUR

VBT_TourBanner_Naked

Author Interview

What are you currently reading?

Mary Poppins by Pamela Travers. The whole series is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Do you have a favorite author? Who is it:

Pamela Travers (at the moment). The message in her books is that magical isn’t behind the everyday, the magic is the everyday. I love that. She wrote a lot of non-fiction essays as well. Her books are rich in mythology, symbology and folklore.

When did you start writing?

When I started reading J  My first verse was about a mouse who lived in a house.

Why do you write?

I’m an academic as well as an author so writing is part of the everyday for me – and it’s magical.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

I’d recommend NAKED to all readers of historical fiction and historical romance who would love to read a sensual and passionate re-telling of the Godiva tale.

If you could go back in time and meet one famous person or legend in history, who would it be? Why? What would you say to them?

I would want to meet Lady Godiva. I would say: ‘thank you’.

How did you come up with the idea for your book? Why did you want to write about Lady Godiva?:

I got the idea for NAKED: A Novel of Lady Godiva while writing about the popularity of the word lady in my academic work. The legend of Lady Godiva intrigued me and I became inspired to write my own version of her tale.  It took me on a wild ride.

Tell us about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

The painting used for the cover of NAKED by John Collier was in the Pre-Raphaelite style (1898).The original is in an art gallery in Coventry, England. When the publishers (St Martin’s Press, New York) chose it I was thrilled because the girl in the painting has long hair just like my daughter’s and we had always noticed the resemblance. My daughter had been trying to get me a copy of the painting – then the book arrived.

Who would you cast for the main characters if your book became a movie?

I wrote NAKED as a screen play before it turned into a novel.  It always seemed to me a story that would make a fantastic movie. It’s got drama, battles, romance, treachery and of course the famous ride. I like to imagine who would play Godiva, Leofric and Edmund, the love triangle in the book. At the moment I like Emma Watson (Harry Potter) or Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) for Godiva.

I’d also like English actor Clive Owen to be in it.  He was born in Coventry, the home of Lady Godiva. I saw him in a play on Broadway recently and I gave him a copy of NAKED!

How about an excerpt from your book meant to capture our imagination and make us want to read more?

The smoky hall was crowded but there was muted chatter at the trestle tables.  The gleeman was silent. All eyes of the household upon me, I sat up on the dais.

My own eyes were sore as I blinked. Aine had bathed them with chamomile water, removing their redness at the rims. I wanted no tell-tale signs in front of Leofric. In a deep blue tunic, trimmed with gold, I had dressed myself with care, my hair brushed and braided. But no jewels.

Not feast. Famine.

Since the mealtime horn had blown, Leofric spoke not a word to me. I darted a swift sideways glance at him. There were no signs of hurt by my anger, in the devastating way I’d been hurt by his. He drank more ale than usual as he exchanged words with the Mercian warriors. Acwell sat to one side of him, avoiding my vision.

A board of bread lay in front of me. The piece I chewed I could barely swallow. It left the taint of ashes on my tongue. I dropped it onto my plate.

Lady.

Loaf-giver.

At last Leofric addressed me. “You do not eat.”

“How can I eat?” Tears threatened again; I forced them back with a tilt of my chin. The Earl of Mercia would never witness me crying. “When soon many will have no food?”

Beneath the beard a muscle worked in his jaw. “The folk of the Middle Lands will get through the hungry month.”

“Many will not. Many will die.”

With both hands I shoved my trencher of food away.

As he followed my movement, his gaze landed on my bare finger.

Tight as a carpenter’s vice, he seized my culprit hand. “Where is your ring?”

“Lost,” I faltered. It still upset me that it had vanished. “It was my own fault. The ring needed to be made smaller by the blacksmith.”

I hadn’t been able to bear to remove it.

“Where did you lose it?” His question as taut as his hold.

“I’m not sure.” In the town, in the fields, in the garden. It could have been anywhere. I’d searched and searched.

He dropped my fingers as if they burnt him. Gripping his silver tankard, he drained it dry.

“Leofric.”

The tankard still in his grasp, he jerked his head towards to me. His hearth-empty eyes gutted my soul.

“Will you repeal the law?”

The tankard slammed down onto the table. Froth spilled onto the linen tablecloth. “You try my patience. Have done. Do you dare to challenge my leadership further?”

“A strong leader lets his people starve?”

His teeth clenched. “Give. This. Up.”

His clipped accents reminded me of when I’d found the huscarl sword. I had blindly obeyed him then. This time I would not.

“Never. I’ll do anything to protect my people.”

In the curl of his beard he lifted his lip in a sneer. “Just what would you do?”

“What must I do?” My tone pitched high as a gleeman’s song. “Must I lie down my head in your lap, as the peasants do, when they become a slave? I will do it. Must I starve? I will do it. Must I ride through the streets in only my shift like a penitent? I will do it. All these things, I will do, to save one child from starving in Coventry.”

Our glances clanged. Sword. Shield.

“You would do such things?”

Under the table my fists tightened. I nodded.

His scorn knifed through me. “A penitent’s ride? You wouldn’t shame yourself in that way.”

“You don’t believe me? I’d make such a ride, if it means you repeal this law.”

Speculation flared as he stared at me. I knew that look.

Then he clicked his fingers. The serving boy ran to his side. “More ale.”

The serving boy poured, his hand shaking.

In a single gulp Leofric drained it and slammed the tankard down on the table. “Again.”

Once more the boy poured.

He drained that too.

All chatter in the hall had turned as quiet as church prayers. From the tables below folk began to listen and watch openly.

Leofric threw down the tankard. It rolled off the table, onto the floor. “You say you would ride, but you would not.”

“Are you saying I don’t keep my word?” Each word I made a dart. “I can assure you, my lord, unlike some, I always keep my word.”

His glare scorched, but mine was equal to it.

“You wouldn’t shame yourself in that way. You would ride through the streets, of Coventry, in only your shift? Like an adulteress? Like a whore?”

As if he had struck me, I reeled.

This from the man to whom I had pledged my body.

For the sake of Coventry.

With my breath came courage deep from my lungs. “It would be no shame to me to save my people.”

He leaned so close I could almost lick the ale from his tongue.

“And would you ride – naked?”

NAKED Book Cover Blurb

We know her name. We know of her naked ride. We don’t know her true story.
We all know the legend of Lady Godiva, who famously rode naked through the streets of Coventry, covered only by her long, flowing hair. So the story goes, she begged her husband Lord Leofric of Mercia to lift a high tax on her people, who would starve if forced to pay. Lord Leofric demanded a forfeit: that Godiva ride naked on horseback through the town. There are various endings to Godiva’s ride, that all the people of Coventry closed their doors and refused to look upon their liege lady (except for ‘peeping Tom’) and that her husband, in remorse, lifted the tax. Naked is an original version of Godiva’s tale with a twist that may be closer to the truth: by the end of his life Leofric had fallen deeply in love with Lady Godiva. A tale of legendary courage and extraordinary passion, Naked brings an epic story new voice.
