Snippet #1

Amy fought to keep her mouth from overriding what she felt. Her instinct was to say something sarcastic, something to deflect from the intensity of the moment. Instead, she said nothing. She didn’t know what to say. Love at first sight wasn’t something she had ever believed in. Still, she couldn’t deny the strong pull she felt toward him. She told herself that it was just the heat of the moment – an effect of the situation and the close quarters.

“I don’t know,” was all she managed.

“I do,” he replied, leaning in to kiss her.

Flames shot to life within her. An almost involuntary moan escaped her lips, vibrating against his lips as they quickly lost themselves in one another. Her hand drifted to his chest, feeling his racing heartbeat thump heavily against her palm. She knew that hers would only match it in speed as her excitement grew and their kiss grew more heated. Amy decided she wasn’t going to fight it. Regardless of what it did, or didn’t, mean, it felt amazing.

Snippet #2

The loud wail of dismay that emanated from the dragon leader’s core seemed to shake the clouds around them as he once again turned and attempted to catch Aaron between his mighty jaws. Aiden’s long neck swung heavily into Aaron’s side, pushing him downward toward The Circle, but they were still well above the horizon and Aaron wasn’t about to let that happen. Whirling around, he swung his tail forcefully, sending it thudding into Aiden’s side before jetting forward further out over the water.

Aiden’s growl filled the sky behind him as he continued in pursuit, chasing him across the water as Aaron climbed ever so gradually higher into the air again. As they continued to climb, Aaron became aware of other dragons in the air. He could see the emblems that were routinely stamped into their scales, a rite of passage for anyone who joined their ranks. He hadn’t anticipated Aiden playing dirty if he brought him out here alone.

Snippet #3

His hand roamed down her lean legs. They were smooth and delicate, but he knew that, as a dragon, they possessed a power greater than their diminutive size. The thought of it only made him want her more as he began kissing his way upward across her calf and along her inner thigh as she moaned beneath him.

Their passion carried them away as they became entangled within one another, their bodies taking over while the stars came out and the moon reappeared from behind the clouds. Kara panted beneath him, begging him for more as he continued to tease her with his mouth and his hands. He wanted her in the worst way, his urges primal, his inner dragon begging for release.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Sitting next to this woman and listening to her aggravating laugh was enough to want to put a bullet through his head. The minute Lora Chilani slid up to him, wrapping her arms around him, he knew he had a great opening into the affairs of the Chilani family. A quick glance at Sarafina had him hesitating, but only for a moment.

He was here to do a job, not fall in love. Sarafina did not register on his scale of priorities, even if he wanted to send her to the top.

Snuggling Lora closer to his body as he laughed at her flirting that did nothing for him, he reinforced the decision to do his job without further distractions.

Because that’s what Sarafina was. A simple distraction. He couldn’t afford even a small one. The tiniest distraction could get him killed. That was the last thing he wanted to do today. He wasn’t ready to die.

But that damn distraction was sitting right next to him, bundled so close to his body, it was difficult not to turn and mold her more perfectly to his frame. And she smelled delicious. A sweet scent of vanilla and lavender. Perhaps her shampoo. Or maybe some sort of hairspray as her hair look coiled to perfection. Or his favorite, a lovely fragrance from a perfume bottle. He always loved a woman wearing a light, airy perfume that enticed him to come closer.

That’s exactly what her scent was doing to him. He wanted to get so close it would be indecent in front of everyone.

“So, what do you do, Dax? With all the crazy details with the wedding, Ryan barely had a chance to tell us more about you,” Lora crooned.

“Business. I work on Wall Street. The details are rather boring and tedious. I’d rather hear more about you.” After speaking that lie, he touched the tip of her nose delicately as if he really wanted to know more about her.

Sarafina shivered next to him. Damn, was she still cold? It would be okay to give her his coat now, except he had this other horrid woman hanging off him. She was either cold, like she claimed before, or her body struggled to keep up with the craziness of the day. Did she really eat like she said she did?

Focus. She is not your concern.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

I opened the door and stepped onto the porch. A soft wind swirled around me, bringing the scent of him. That was Ryker, clean and fresh and strong. A tinge of smoke wafted in on the breeze, and I scrunched my nose. That wasn’t Ryker, or at least I didn’t think it was. “You smoke?”

He pushed off the trunk of the enormous oak tree and tossed his cigarette to the ground, smashing it with the toe of his boot. Out of the shadows, he stepped in front of me. “Generally no. But when I’m stressed, yes.” He dropped his head as if shamed.

I don’t know what compelled me to touch him, but I couldn’t resist laying my hand on his chest. I felt his heart thumping under my fingertips. “What stresses you?”

“Everything stresses me. Sheriff Stuart. This damn house. This damn town. It all stresses me the fuck out.” He kicked at the dead grass under his boot. “You stress me out.”

“Me?” I gripped the edge of his jacket. “Me? Why?”

His gaze lasered into me. “When you dropped me off, I went upstairs and tried to sleep, but I couldn’t. I’m fighting with myself.” He reached for my cheek. His fingers sure and able. His touch soft. “I want you.” He threaded his hand through my hair. “I know if I have you, I’ll destroy you. I destroy everything I touch.”

He leaned closer and then stepped back, but didn’t drop his gaze. Didn’t drop his hold.

I leaned in. I wanted him closer. I wanted the kiss he was denying me.

“Fuck it, I’m weak when it comes to you.” He pulled me into his arms, and his lips crushed mine with a ferocity I’d never experienced. I tried to throttle back the dizzying current that raced through me, but it was no use. If Ryker was intent on destroying me, I was a willing victim.

Highly recommend! Romance novels aren’t normally my niche, but this book was fantastic! It had a romantic undertone but the plot was enthralling and magical. I couldn’t put the book down and finished it in just a few days. … Truly a gem and pleasure to read! I can’t wait for volume 2…

How We Fall

How We Fall
Melissa Toppen
Publication date: April 21st 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It’s not always about how we fall- it’s about where we end up once we land.

I remember the very first time I laid eyes on Cole Lincoln. It still feels like yesterday when he stumbled into my life with his messy brown hair and dark eyes. Even though I was only ten years old at the time, I knew right then and there that he was going to change everything.

From that point on Cole and I were always together—inseparable—and I naively believed we’d be best friends forever. But forever didn’t last nearly as long as I expected.

We grew up and grew apart, life driving the distance between us, but my love for Cole never faltered. Even long after he moved away, leaving me and our little town behind, I still carried a piece of him with me every single day. Because Cole wasn’t just my childhood best friend- the boy who knew me better than anyone else in the whole world. He was also my first love- a part of my very core.

When a tragic death brings us face to face again after six years, every single memory comes rushing to the surface. Only this is not the boy I fell in love with all those years ago. The man before me is hardened, intimidating, and so damn sexy I practically melt when those dark eyes meet mine for the first time in six years.

And like the first time he walked into my life, I know with complete certainty that everything is about to change.

How We Fall is a STANDALONE Contemporary Romance.

Excerpt #1:
His arms flexed as he adjusted the armoire in the corner. He wiped his hands on his thin t-shirt. It rode up as he picked at something on the door. He ran his hand through his shaggy light brown hair. He stood back and rubbed the stubble on his chin.
I watched him as he reached out and caressed the wood.
I felt it on my cheek.
He leaned in and rested his forehead on the wood.
I leaned in too.
His beautiful lips whispered something to the wood.
I felt the wisp of air on my earlobe and shivered.
He made a fist as his forearms flexed and knocked twice.
“Come in,” I whispered and gasped.
Excerpt #2
I placed a hand on his abs to push him away, but when I touched the immovable force, BAM, a chill hit me again, and I stopped breathing. He must have felt something too. He exhaled and looked down at our hands.
“Wow,” he whispered and dropped my hand.
I held in a whimper from the immediate loss and turned back to my table. I could feel his presence behind me. Not physical, like when I fell into his arms, but no less powerful and consuming. I exhaled myself.
“Brooklyn,” I said and reached for the handle of my suitcase.
“Brooklyn.”
God, the way he said my name.
His tone pleaded for me to turn around.
“I really need to get set up here.” I didn’t recognize my own voice.
“Can I help?” He reached around and brushed his fingers over mine. Of course, I would have the book labeled bedroom in my hand. I would have giggled at the irony if the thought of him in a bedroom didn’t cross my inappropriate mind.
His powerful aura, for lack of a better term, felt familiar. Not that I had been near him before, but I knew his type. He commanded everything around him. His being alone demanded your attention and devotion.
I shook the thought out of my head.
“I’ve got it covered,” I said with more confidence than I felt.
He sighed.
The disappointment rolled off his body and engulfed me.
I’d disappointed him.
He was displeased with me.
I shook it off again. I had no allegiance to this man. We had never even met before.

Excerpt #2
“Spanking?”
She rolled her eyes and gave me an, oh, please look.
“Not an acceptable response. That’s one.”
“One what?” I asked.
“One spanking. I’ll ask you again. Spanking?”
“Yes.”
“Blood play.”
“Hard limit.” Her eyes grew wide.
I smirked.
She licked her lips.
I unbuttoned and unzipped my pants.
“Choking.”
She hesitated but whispered, “Soft.”
She responded to me choking her earlier. I wasn’t sure if it were something she’d played around with before.
“Shibari?”
“Yes, but . . .” She stopped.
“Continue.”
“No suspending me from the ceiling and leaving me for days.” She shivered.
“Okay.” I let my jeans fall to the ground.
Her eyes sparkled. She strained to watch.
I ran my hand over the bulge in my shorts and held in a groan.
“Anal,” I said.
“Yes.” No hesitation.
That’s my girl.
“Humiliation,” I said with a raised eyebrow.
“Soft.” She drew out the word.
“What’s your concern?” I kneeled on the bed.
“It’s not important. We can discuss it later.”
“I wouldn’t have asked the question if I didn’t want to know.” I ran my hands up her legs.
Her eyes grew wet as she blinked to prevent her tears from falling.
Seeing her cry hit me in the gut. I laid down and cupped her cheek.
“What is it? Brooklyn. Tell me.”
“Malcolm . . .” She blinked. “He used to call me names, and I liked it, but then his friends would do the same, and I didn’t. I don’t know.” Her tears flowed.
“Maybe you’re right. This isn’t the time to do this.” I laid a hand against her cheek.
“I’m sorry.” She blinked.
“Brooklyn. You have nothing to be sorry for. I want to know you. Every part of you. Even the stuff you’re ashamed and embarrassed about. All of it made you into this incredible, beautiful, sexy woman.” I kissed her. Tasted her tears on my lips. I moved a hand down to her tits and unhooked the clasp on the front of her bra. Her tits were real and firm, her nipples hard. I took one in my mouth and pinched the other.
She whimpered.
I teased her with my teeth and my tongue.
Her moans told me she liked them both.
My hand traveled down her stomach and into her panties. I ran my fingers through her folds, her pussy wet and swollen from me touching her before.
She moaned and squirmed against my touch.
I pressed a finger inside her.
She squeezed her pussy around it.
I pushed in two.
She ground against my hand.
“Sir,” she said against my mouth.
“Yes, my sweet sub.”
She smiled a sweet grin, with a little mischievous gleam in her eye.
“Will you please fuck me now?”
I stopped.
The smile fell from her lips.
I removed her panties and climbed between her legs. I slid on a condom and laid down; our bodies flush against each other, my full weight on her. I reached up and clasped my hands with hers where they were cuffed together. I lifted her thighs over my hips, grabbed my cock, and pressed into her in one motion.
“Oh, fuck.” We both growled. If I had any doubt this woman was made for me, the moment I entered her for the first time, confirmed it. I memorized everything about how it felt. Me, deep inside her, my cock squeezed in the most perfect way, and her eyes staring into mine.

Along with searching for her missing mother, figuring out a clever way to pay for school tuition on her own, and dealing with the childish pranks brought on by a certain roommate, Jo’s issues seem more complicated than the average 21-year-old. Can Jo endure the dramatic perils of college while planning for life after graduation?

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

“Breathe, Rob! Just breathe!” I demand in a panicky voice from the back seat as we swiftly pull up to the entrance of the hospital. Clutching his chest in pain next to me, he heaves out a few spouts of air, but it’s not enough to help him.

Shit!

I watch my roommate Rob’s cheeks turn from a shade of deep pink to a dark crimson red. “A.J.! He’s getting worse!” I yell to my other roommate in the driver’s seat. He rolls his eyes then turns around.

“Calm down, Jo!” he exclaims. “I can’t think when you’re yelling like this!”

Drew, our other roommate, and usually the voice of reason, says nothing as he quickly jumps out of the Range Rover and runs into the hospital entrance.

“Can’t. Breathe,” Rob manages to force out of his mouth, then before I know it, his body falls limp and his head somehow ends up on my lap. His eyes roll to the back of his head.

“I think he’s dying!” I whine and suddenly I’m losing my breath.

Releasing a loud groan, A.J. climbs out of the SUV and casually walks into the hospital as if nothing is wrong.

Why is he so calm and I’m flipping the hell out?

I begin to shake Rob’s shoulders but he doesn’t respond and I’m almost positive that he’s not breathing at all now.

It’s official.

I killed my roommate.

Okay, maybe he’s not dead yet, but if death was a road, he just made a left turn for the worse then ran over a few annoying potholes and some week old roadkill…and probably drove off a cliff or something…

Ugh! I don’t even know what I’m saying anymore! I feel guilty for doing this to him and I feel even more guilty because I kinda hate his arrogant, smug ass, but just because someone is an asshole doesn’t mean that they deserve to die, does it?

The back door opens and I see A.J. and Drew standing outside with a wheelchair. A.J. roughly wraps his arms around Rob’s body and begins to pull him out of the car. “Fuck! He’s like the size of an ogre,” he complains as he struggles to get Rob into the wheelchair. The fact that Rob is as useless as a wet noodle right now makes it difficult for A.J. to adjust Rob’s body in the chair. I cringe just watching it.

“I knew this was going to happen one day,” Drew says shaking his head. “The inevitable always happens.”

Shooting Drew a snarling glare, A.J. grits his teeth. “Just roll the goddamn chair into the hospital,” he instructs. Drew turns the chair around and begins to jog into the emergency room with Rob’s body leaning to one side. A.J. looks at me in the SUV, annoyed. “Well, are you coming?” he asks and I just freeze.

Do I stay? Do I go? I don’t know what to do with myself!

Taking a quick yet deep breath, I climb out of the SUV, shut the door and join A.J. on the other side of the vehicle.

“I’m horrible,” I blurt out and I can feel wetness welling in my eyes. “I’m a horrible person.”

“Dammit, Jo! I hate it when girls cry,” he complains as he shuts the other back door and begins to walk into the hospital. He pauses in his tracks when he notices that I’m not following him.

I’m frozen.

I’m not your boyfriend. I’m not the guy next door. I don’t even play nice.

My hands twisting in your hair, my whispered demand in your ear—I’m the fantasy you’ll wish you never had.

When I’m through with you, every inch of your body will know where I’ve been. You won’t crave more, you’ll beg for it. Because I’m not just the cocky smile with military hardened muscles you paid five grand for—I’m the experience you’ll never forget.

One night with me and you’ll know exactly why women pay me to be rough.

Author Bio:

Sybil Bartel grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She dreamt of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books drew her into the world of storytelling. She loves the New Adult genre, but any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful makes her swoon.

Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she isn’t writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer…

But Seriously?

Here are ten things you probably really want to know about Sybil.

She grew up a faculty brat. She can swear like a sailor. She loves men in uniform. She hates being told what to do. She can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks her out. Her favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—she can’t decide. She has a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on her for driving directions, ever. And she has a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell her husband.

MY REVIEW

Sundresses and sunrises

This book is a stand-alone, but part of an amazing series I highly recommend you dive into.

“Broken hero angst and ruggedly handsome features” – that’s how Sybil Bartel describes your next book boyfriend, Jared Brandt, through Sienna Montclair’s eyes. In Thrust, you got a glimpse of Jared and his wicked ways when he fills in for Alex. In Rough, you get the full picture and what a picture that is. Alpha male at his best, Jared craves control and has zero patience for weak people. Despite her naivete, Sienna is no wimp. With a messed-up family history and trust issues, she won’t make it easy on the soon-to-be-reformed male escort. On the other hand, Jared’s physical and emotional scars get in his way more often they not. I don’t’ do spoilers, so this is as much of the plot as I feel comfortable giving away, but if you enjoy highly sensual, superbly well-written stories, this book is for you.

I’m a sucker for multiple POVs and this story is told from Sienna’s and Jared’s perspective. As a writer, I appreciate the difficulty in keeping distinct voices when writing that way, and Ms. Bartel did an excellent job at that. Kudos.

Lastly, because it’s my favorite part, bedroom scenes. Well, Jared doesn’t restrain himself to beds, and thank you for that, Mr. Sexy. Let me put it this way: You’ll never prepare eggs or enjoy sunrises the same way after you read this book. Trust me!

Some of my favorite quotes:

Sienna – “His voice, husky and rough, crawled across my nerves like the sweetest lie life ever dealt.”

Jared – “I just want to breathe the same air as you.”

Jared – “I’m no good for you. I’ll f*** you up in ways you never imagined. You’re probably better off with a g***mn baller. But I’m selfish enough to try and convince you otherwise.”

PS: Be sure to leave a review and email Sybil for the bonus scene. You NEED it. ❤
