“That’s all you’ve got? Nothing? No one? And no reason? You’re telling me this is random?” Kyara pushed to her feet knowing this was a waste of time. Before she could move though, the door opened and another police officer came into the room. He nodded at the other one who got up and left. He then closed the door. Kyara’s eyes widened.

“Have a seat please.”

It didn’t sound like a request but an order. Kyara tentatively sat down, never taking her eyes off him. Something had shifted. There was something very ominous about the man, she just wasn’t sure if it was his overly bushy eyebrows, his military cut steel grey hair, his six foot five, two-hundred-and-fifty-pound frame, the rigid way he was holding himself or the hard look on his face. She almost got the feeling they felt she was guilty. Realizing he was talking, she pulled her mind back to the conversation.

“…please tell me about your relationship with Elizabeth Wilson?”

It dawned on her that she’d missed who he was, his rank and what this was about. But that wasn’t something she was about to ask him to repeat. Her stomach felt weighted with rocks. “Uh, she’s my grandmother.” What has she done now?

“And where is she?”

“What?”

“You know she got out of prison a while ago?”

“Yes.”

“Well she hasn’t shown up for her parole meetings for the last month. Any idea where she is?”

“No.” One thing Getty had taught her was to keep your answers short and then they’d never come back to bite her.

“Any idea where she might be?”

“No.”

“Have you seen her?”

“No.” Kyara clasped her hands tightly into fists.

“If you hear from her, you’ll let us know?”

“Yes.”

The policeman stared at her with a look that almost had her diving under the table but she could hear Getty telling her to grow a backbone and not let anyone intimidate her. She felt like a bowl of mush on the inside but sat rigidly looking in his direction just not directly into his eyes. It was another tip her grandmother had given her, as a way of standing up to someone without really intimidating them but not really backing down either. Finally, he stood up, so Kyara followed suit.

“If you hear from Elizabeth, please let us know.”

Kyara nodded, “I will. And you’ll let me know when you’ve caught the person who damn near killed my mom, right?”

5***** Edge-of-the-seat kind of thriller

Deadly Ties is not the first book I read by Maggie Thom so I knew she’s an award winner for good reasons and she does not disappoint with this one.

Although I can’t say much about the story to avoid spoiling it, I can safely say that you’re in for a great ride. Deadly Ties has all the best elements of a thriller: suspicion, betrayal, false accusations, vengeance, secrets, and murder. Not to mention shady characters to spare. You will never know who might surprise you next. It is that good.

One more positive, in my opinion, is the puzzle-like quality of the plot. Maggie builds up the story through the interactions of its many characters. At the same time, the author doesn’t make it as if the characters are lecturing to the reader but rather like the reader is eavesdropping on their conversations. All the information you need is provided; only the writer scatters if throughout the book and concentrates the resolutions towards the end, as a good mystery requires.

Also, the use of third person POV is crucial to the way this story is written; however, there’s no head-hopping as we get to know a little bit more of each character’s psyche when we get inside their heads. Good job, Maggie!!

I highly recommend this book but start reading it when you have some time to spare because it’ll be impossible to put it down.

  2. Hi Becky. I would say to write. Just write. Forget the rules. Don’t worry about the end goal, yet. Focus on writing. And don’t worry about what your story looks like as you go – do NOT edit as you go. You really need to get the story down so that then you have something to play with. Once you have it written, you can rewrite, cut, add, do what needs to be done to make it look and sound good. If you’re struggling with getting writing, block some time, even fifteen minutes 3 to 5 times a week, is a great place to start. Check out http://www.glennamageau.com In writing, I always write the story, even if some things I know don’t work with something else in my story. I wait until I’m done writing it, then I go back through and see what makes sense, what doesn’t, what’s too much… I ask myself questions – does this make sense? would this person act this way? what does this part need to make it believable?
