5/5 STARS – Great book about love and second chances.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Before I started reading this book, a questions intrigued me – who is ‘the kind of woman who has an affair’ as the blurb puts it? Is there such a thing as a kind of person who has affairs? I’ve always thought that circumstances might lead a person to that kind of situation but never thought that cheating could be perceived as a personality trait.

Apparently, that’s also the idea behind ‘Devil’s Playground’. One shouldn’t judge another person’s behavior before all the facts are revealed, and that’s my advice for potential readers. Don’t judge this book only by the blurb and definitely don’t judge it by personal concepts of fidelity. I’ve always thought cheating was wrong and although the author didn’t make me change my mind about this, she actually made me realize things are not as black and white as I’d like to think they are. Since I’ve never been in the same spot as the characters in ‘Devil’s Playground’ are I can’t say they’re wrong. Circumstances did put them together and they did fight temptation at first. Moreover, this book isn’t about infidelity, it’s about losing oneself and finding one’s way again. It’s about second chances and love. It’s about feelings and family. If you doubt me, read the last two paragraphs of the acknowledgments. Well-done, Eliza Freed. I can’t wait for The Lion’s Den.

Eliza Freed graduated from Rutgers University and returned to her hometown in rural South Jersey. Her mother encouraged her to take some time and find herself. After three months of searching, she began to bounce checks and her neighbors began to talk; her mother told her to find a job.

  2. Lovely review! I know the whole affair theme can make some people skip out on reading a book, but it actually intrigues me to get into the mind of these characters and see why/how etc. We always judge before seeing the whole picture – it’s in our nature to stereotype I guess – so this sounds like a book that makes you see it in their perspective. Glad you liked it! 🙂
